The huge North and South Platforms, with wide stairways leading up to additional buildings, mark the ends of the plaza. Stone was the preferred construction material, and naturally occurring limestone and sandstone blocks were readily available at Monte Alban. Major structures here are relatively low, earthquake-resistant stone platforms.
