| The ancient Zapotec city of Monte Alban is built on an island of hills in the center of the Valley of Oaxaca in the southern highlands of Mexico. Several features like the naturally defensible hilltop setting, the central location with respect to outlying communities, and the wide expanse of rich agricultural land on the valley floor several hundred meters below the site where much of the city's food was grown, allowed Monte Alban to reach prominence. |
