The amate is a tree used to produce paper. This paper was made from the inner bark of the wild fig tree for making codices (Mesoamerican books). Here at Chalcatzingo, the amate trees which grow attached to the cliffs and exhibit a great flexibility are integral parts of the "sacred landscape".
