The seventeen colossal human heads reported from the Olmec heartland all appear to portray adult males wearing headgear vaguely reminiscent of 1920s style football helmets. Although facial features vary from sculpture to sculpture, the subjects are fully human. Some scholars believe the heads are portraits of real people, perhaps rulers or warriors, while others regard them as idealized representations of such historic personages.
