Made of large serpentine blocks, this abstract mosaic mask was systematically buried under colored clays and adobe bricks at La Venta. Tassels decorate the chin, and a cleft marks the top of the head of a serpent-jaguar conflated supernatural. Middle Formative, it is an offering dedicated to the forces of the Underworld.
