The most important structure is a large pyramid toward the end of the northern axis, in the form of what has been called a 'fluted cake.' This impressive mound may have been intended to echo the shape of a Central Mexican or a regional volcano, or is it may simply be the eroded remains of a pyramidal platform - the first of a long series in Mesoamerican history - designed to raise a perishable shrine above the plaza.
