| Although modern La Venta is an "island" of high ground surrounded by marshes, the Olmec capital occupied a ridge overlooking the then active Rio Palma River. During the 400 or 500 year occupation of the site, both monumental architecture and earthworks of colored clays and imported stones were completed. | ||
