Services are provided by highly trained paraprofessional mental health counselors who deliver 95% of direct client services. These servcies are: telephone hotline counseling, information and referral service, couple and family counseling, support groups and community outreach and advocacy. Hotline counseling is available from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. everyday Volunteer Duties/Responsibilities: Volunteers are in an intensive counselor program. The staff provides a warm atmosphere for the children who suffer from illnesses such as "failure to thrive" syndrom for infants, meningitis, and childhood leukemia. (Children with infectious communicable diseases such as measles, mumps, chicken pox, and other viruses are isolated on a separate ward; volunteers have the option whether or not to interact with these children. Volunteer Duties/Responsibilities: Volunteers are needed especailly in the area of play therapy where there is an attempt to make the hospital atmosphere as home-like as possible. Volunteers in this area will interact with children in simulation games and in other recreational activities. Other volunteer positions are ward aides, feeding playing and talking with children, reading aloud Starlight Express Room and for those who are fluent in English and Spanish, translators are needed in the emergency room. Requirement and Training: Volunteers will be required to go through blood (Rubella) and TB testing. Most students will already have been imunized against Rubella and will need to show proof of that. They will also be required to wear a special kind of vest (cover), apron, t-shirt and shoes while doing their volunteer work. Volunteer Duties/Responsibilities: Treatment Education Intern: Treatment Education, a component of the Client Health Education and Advocacy Unit, provides treatment information for persons infected and affected by HIV disease through group presentations, one-on-one counseling, development of written materials and advocacy to pharmaceutical companies and government agencies for access to drug therapies. The intern will work with treatment advocates helping to research and develop written materials, compile and organize information, and assist with data processing research projects. The intern will also assist in certain administrative duties, such as faxing Treatment Alerts. Requirement and Training: Interns must have an interest in helping people infectied and affected with HIV disease and be sensitive and compassionate to the needs of people living with or dealing with HIV disease. Interns should have a strong communication skills, both oral and written, and have some knowledge of computer skils. Requirement and Training: Orientation to the hospital campus and policies/procedures is provided by the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.
