Agency Description:
            The Police Department is responsible for protecting the legal rights of individuals, aggressive crime fighting, and promoting community safety.  The department's personnel dispatch and respond to calls for service, conduct investigations, testify in court, initiate public contacts, operate crime and drug prevention programs, administer for fire and humane services, etc..  The department focuses on efficient means of operation by use of advanced technology, scheduling practices, training of personnel and careful management of resources.              A volunteer is needed to assist the Account Specialist III with inventory and purchasing of supplies for the Police Dept..  Duties would involve stocking and replenishing supply cabinets and storerooms.  The volunteer would also assist with accounts payable duties and budget preparation when time permitted.

            The volunteer will receive training on a 1 to 1 basis from an experienced professional in the area of accounting and purchasing. Basic concepts of general office practices and procedures will be taught, as well as the fundamentals of government accounting, municipal code regulations and the requirements for operating in the public sector.

Assist with a joint program between the D.A. 's office, Probation, community organizations and Bell Gardens Intermediate School, to promote school attendance and deter juvenile delinquency by working with youth and their families. 

Volunteers will be assigned to one of six schools in Bell Gardens, Montebello or La Mirada and will assist a Reserve Probation Officer with a caseload of 15 at risk youth.  Other duties will include working directly with families, making home visits and maintaining case files.

            The objective of LAPD's Jeopardy Program is designed to assist "At Risk" kids (9-14 yrs) exit a downward spiral of poor school performance involvement with street gangs and low grade misdemeanor crimes.  Our goal is to get these students back on track before the ruin their chances of succeeding in their academic careers.                  Looking for people to tutor jeopardy students in all school subjects as well as teach karate, Drama, Acting , and Dance lessons.  Volunteers will also tutor in all basic Jr. High and High school subjects and coach basketball and other sports teams.  We are flexible & open to your ideas.  If you would like to start sessions in your area of expertise we will consider it.

            The Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center of L.A. provides dispute resolution, mediation, telephone conciliation service to the Asian pacific American community and low income residents of Los Angeles.  This center educates the public about mediation/alternative dispute resolution through outreach, consultations and mediation training.  Assistance in a variety of Asian languages is also available through the center.             Volunteers will provide administrative assistance in monthly reports and maintaining case files.  Volunteers will also make the initial client contacts via phone or interview.  Volunteers will assist in the outreach and recruitment of other volunteers for the center and help to organize training sessions for these volunteers.  Volunteers will also have the opportunity to work as caseworkers in mediation/telephone conciliation as well as performing general office work.

            Students will be expected to make the commitment of volunteering for 8 hours per week for at least 1 quarter (80 hours cumulative).  Days and times of volunteering are flexible.  There will be in-service training for intaking and administrative work provided.  Students who are interested in becoming state certified volunteer mediators must attend a 30 hour training (offered by the center twice a year) and perform an additional 20 hours of supervised casework and mediation.

            Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles has five offices throughout the Los Angeles area and one is located in the East L.A. area.  The agency provided legal assistance to low income persons (families) throughout the county.  The agency is staffed by attorneys and their staff who are experienced in servicing the special needs of the poor and working poor.  The legal services that are available to the community are in housing, government benefits such as welfare, social security, and medical, immigration, homeownership, family law, consumer law, employment law, and community economic development                        Student volunteers who are interested in volunteering with the Legal Aid Foundation would be working closely with attorneys, assisting with legal research, and helping to interview with clients.  Volunteers are urgently needed for special projects.  Asian Community Project which volunteers will be working with an attorney helping clients with family law problems.  You will get experience from interviewing clients to research and writing briefs and motions on behalf of the clients.  Bilingual in API preferred.  Battered Immigrant Women's Project will involve in helping women both to obtain relief from harassment and to navigate the immigration process.  Volunteers will prepare for hearings, prepare witnesses, and complete applications.  Spanish fluency is helpful.  (Attorney Fregoso's project out of the East Los Angeles Office)

            The Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund was founded in San Antonio, Texas in 1968, following the decades of discrimination and violations of the civil rights of Mexican Americans.  MALDEF is a national, nonprofit organization whose principal objective is to promote and protect the civil rights of the Hispanics living in the United States.  Throughout the years, MALDEF has been set the forefront of civil rights litigation, setting precedents in many cases and enabling  new systems to elect officials, hire employees and educate our children.  Today MALDEF continues to expand opportunities for Hispanics, allowing them to become full, productive members of our society.                There are 4 programs that volunteers may work with:  Education Program:    ensures equal educational opportunities for Hispanics by gaining equal allocation of school district resources and maintaining programs that assist students with limited English-speaking abilities and curb the high Hispanic dropout rate.  Employment Program: expands job opportunities for Hispanics by eliminating barriers that prevent Hispanics from being hired and from moving into the management ranks, protecting the fights of Hispanic employees under new immigration law, and challenging English-only rules in the workplace. Political Access Program:  enhances Hispanic participation and influence in the political process by replacing discriminatory election systems with those that better serve the Hispanic community and by eliminating voter registration practices. Immigrant's Rights Program: protect the civil rights of Hispanic Americans and the immigrant poor.   
Requirement /Commitment and Training:
            No specific major is required to volunteer.  Volunteer work depends on the interests of the volunteer and on which of the programs he/she chooses to work with.  MALDEF is very flexible with volunteers and their work will be formed around the hours most convenient for the volunteer.  Junior and Senior status is suggested.  Volunteers should be willing to commit at least three hours a week per quarter.  Volunteers need to send a resume and cover letter with a writing letter prior to volunteering.

            The Northeast Juvenile Justice Center serves the greater East Los Angeles area.  The Center brings together under one roof all the major criminal justice and related agencies.  The Center has a Case Review Panel comprised of representative from probation, law enforcement, schools and D.C.S.C.S.  Counseling and referral services are also provided to families with children who are truant, who are runaways, and/or incorrigible (high risk youth).  The Center provides encouragement and assistance to the community and its youth by providing delinquency prevention activities, such as rap sessions.  The Center is utilized for diverting juvenile offenders from the court system, whenever it appears that this will be an effective action.             Volunteers who are interested in the field of rehabilitation and youth, will have the opportunity to assist with probation officers and the youth.  Upon request, volunteers can learn interviewing techniques, court procedures, initial investigation techniques.  But, overall volunteers will be helping with general office work, such as typing and filing.

            The Victim-Witness Assistance program is a state funded program which provides comprehensive services for victims of a violent crime.  The program provides state compensation in the form of administrative and monetary relief.  The program encourages the participation of the victims to assist in the prosecution of criminals.                    Volunteers will help the program staff by providing assistance in the determination and assessment of the victim's needs, information on victim's rights, and victim of crime compensation assistance.  Volunteers will answer inquiries from the public regarding victim compensation, explain court procedures, and refer victims to appropriate community agencies.  Also, volunteers will provide general office and clerical assistance.

            As part of the Juvenile Justice System, the East Los Angeles Parole Office supervises approximately 300 youthful offenders who have completed an average of 27 months in a youth facility.  We continue the rehabilitation of our wards and maintain community safety.                    A Parole Volunteer, under the direction of parole staff will assist and prepare forms and drug paraphernalia for the substance abuse participants in the following manner: The volunteer will fill out all clinical information in the request for urine examination by the laboratory. Prepare all labeling of urine specimen containers. Will assist in the acquiring of urine specimens from the substance abuse participants.  Will assist in the eye and skin examination administered for the purpose of possible substance abuse.  The volunteer will assist the parole staff in developing community resources, such as schools,  social services, mental health agencies, and outside residential placements.  Their duties will include the following but are not limited to: drug testing, peer counseling, home contacts, community assessment reports, record keeping (attendance, filing, preparing of statistical data), attend counseling group sessions, ride along with parole staff during home contacts and interviews

            Dependency Court Legal Services is a non-profit organization which provides legal representation for parents, children, and others in dependency court litigation.  Dependency courts deal with cases alleging child abuse or neglect.  DCLS has two offices, one in Panorama City and one in downtown Los Angeles.  All cases are heard in the Monterey Park Children's Court                       Need office assistant:  answer phones to take messages, photocopies, prepare faxes, set up new files, assist in preparing legal documents, and other law office tasks.  Will involve client phone contact and assisting attorneys with various projects.

Volunteer Orientation:
            Volunteers will be given same orientation as employees in CDLS policies and safety training in document production.  Some volunteers may be given the opportunity to visit courtrooms and attend attorney training sessions.  Volunteers need to bring a resume at time of orientation.  2-8 hours a week (flexible) and would like a 45 to 75 hour commitment.
